5:42 am, Sunday July 30th 2006.

Well it's the last post of the blogathon,

It's been an amazing day it really has. I got to experience first hand the wonderful workings of one of my favourite places in the whole world. I got to work hand in hand with my partner in crime and charity Kat for something we both believe in. I got to eat pizza hut twice in one day... wait, thats pretty normal for me, but still, mmmm, mushrooms.

I got to hear from and interact with a bunch of wonderful people here, and on forums, and in chat. I had the opportunity to stay awake 30 hours for a reason!

I learned a lot, I smiled a lot, and I typed way too much! I had my friends Billy and Becca come thru for me, and for the animals (they're absolutely animal nuts!) And drag their rockstar friends into the charity frey as well?!

And who would have thought 20 years ago when I was sitting in my room listening to the "Cherry Pie" sigle on casette on my silver boombox, that one day Jani Lane would be calling on behalf of my charity event?

Who knew that a bunch of insomniatic techno nerds would raise nearly $100,000 for charity just by updating their website 48 times in one day?

Who knew that 15 people I have never met would donate nearly $400 to people they don't know for a wonderful charity like Glendale Humane Society?

Bless you all, you gave so much, and made my heart swell with pride and faith that good things still happen, even in the darkest hours.

This last post I want to post a personal story or heroic dogs, one I have not shared before. A little something I can give back to all of you who have been following all along.

Please forgive any spelling, or grammer errors, I'm going to be writing this from the heart, and won't have time to go over it or spell check it.

My life has been saved twice by my dogs, once as a young child, and once as a earily teen.

When I was 7, maybe 8, living in the mountians of Upstate NY, I had a terrier mix that we found as a stray on Rte 20 while driving to Albany. Her name was Noodles, and she was a sweet ragedy looking thing, the kind of dog every kid wants. High energy, lots of affection, loyal and playful.

The first winter I had noodles, I was sledding down a hill behind my house, she would run behind me and help me tow the sled back up the hill, over and over, hour upon hour. Problem with snow is you cannot see what lies just beneath it, and while sledding I hit a rather large stone that threw me in the air, I came back down on that jagged stone right on my spine.

One quick shreik and then I was paralyzed. Lying on my back in almost 3 feet of snow, freezing, barely able to breathe. Noodles knew something was wrong and kept licking me, but all I could do is blink and strugle for breath. When I didn't get up in a few minutes Noodles started whining and barking, eventually she ran to the kitchen window of my house and scrached and barked constantly until my parents came out to see what she wanted.

It was strange behaviour for noodles, a generally quiet dog who followed me at my heels everywhere I went. When Noodles led them to the back yard they saw me in the distance, pale and paralyzed still in the snow. I felt like I couldn't even cry and all I wanted to do is scream for help, but had no breath to scream with.

It turned out the stone had bruised my spine causing a few hours of paralysis, and in time I got full use of my body back. But it was time I didn't have in the 20 degree New York winter.

That day Noodles saved my life. She downright saved my life, and I have no doubt that without her I would not be here to type this blog and help save many more Noodles's, on the street or in the shelters, just looking for a home.

4 Years later Noodles was taken from me when she was shot for sport by a drunken child abuser, we'll call him Mr. D. and I didn't find out for another year until his son whom often was the target of his violence finally releived his concience and cried the whole story out to me.

My dog saved my life, only to lose hers to a loaded scumbag with a loaded pistol when nobody was home.

Not all stories are happy. Many involve pain and recovery, but it is the miracle of dogs like noodles who have shown people such as myself that there is a reason we are here. We are here to protect, to heal, to mend the broken and soothe the wounded. We are here to save both animals and people from ourselvs.

I realize this blog is taking forever to write, so I am sorry it will not appear right at 6 AM

The second story I would like to share, is about a dog named Sasha. Sasha was a rescue, doxie-terrier mix my Grandmother, whom I had taken to living with somewhere around the time of my parents divorce, had adopted. We picked her up at my Aunt's house, who worked with local shelters and had a kennel herself she ran a rescue from. From the first day Sasha came home we bonded, instantly, like I have never bonded to a dog before, or since. She spoke Brant, and I spoke Sasha. We became literally inseperable. I trained her dozens of tricks. Would film her performing the tricks, and dub music or vocal tracks over the video. We would go for walks hour upon hour, and the thought of Sasha sleeping on the floor at night made both our backs ache.

Whenever a stranger approached, Shasha would bear her teeth and quickly chase off anyone who approached that she didn't know. Sure I know the Jahova Witnesses didn't like her much, but I found it endeering.

But years passed, I entered my teens, and dispite my life becomeing more and more complex, becoming more and more busy, I still spoke Sasha, and she still spoke Brant. Not school, not college, not touring, nothing broke that bond, and nothing kept me away longer than a week before I came home to visit my two favourite people in the world, Sasha and my Grandma.

Sure Sasha would chase off any girlfriend the moment she so much as touched my shoulder, but I forgave her because I understood her. And pretty soon I went as far as to make my friends pass the "Sasha Test"

Thats right, if she growls at you, you couldn't possiable be good, because she understood a lot more than she got credit for, she was a litmus test of charrecter.

I could not count the hours I laid on the floor watching TV at 3 am in some insomniatic bout, with sasha at my side or sneaking under me head, kicking the pillow away. I can't tell you how many times I confided in Sasha, thoughts and worries I wouldn't dare tell another soul. There were times when my life was so dismal, I didn't know how I would get thru tomorow, but as sure as the rain will fall, my worries were often bruhed away by that muzzle edging itself into my dangling palm.

I had many friends growing up, but none so loyal, none so confidable, none as close as Sasha.

The last time I saw Sasha she growled at me, the only time she had shown a shred of aggression tward me in over a decade. Blind, deaf, and in constant incurable pain, she was put down a month later, and no one had the heart to tell me. No one wanted to break the news my best friend had died.

Sasha saved my life countless times, when I thought who could stand this world of cruelty, misery, abuse, violence, apathy, greed, hatred, prejudice? When at only 13, I couldn't see the point of living out your life just to feed the monster that destroys everything in it's path.

But the answer was simple, Sasha could. For whatever reason she fought for every last breath, and every last moment with those she loved. She saw a reason to keep going and I trust her judgement now as much as I did then.

I never allowed myself time to mourn the loss of Noodles or Sasha, but I did this morning. This morning I will finally shed a few tears and say good-bye the animals who saved my life, and do my best to return the favor whenever and wherever I can.

Good bye, good night, and good work to both of you...

to all of you.

6:29 AM Sunday July 30th, 2006.

When I asked for people to share stories of their beloved pets with me, so I may pass them on to you, I thought it would be an uplifting experience. We’d all laugh, and cry, and have a good time, because all pet stories are great right?

Well that’s not necessarily true.

First off I want to thank justdawn for being brave enough to share this heartbreaking story.

“When I was in high school, I got a German Shepherd mix from the pound. She was the nuttiest dog EVER..but I totally adored her.

It was the summer after graduation when there was a rash of burglaries in my neighborhood.

I was coming home one night after having been out and I saw the sihlouette of a person fleeing my back yard...not realizing that the gate had been left open.

We got a phone call early the next morning from one of our neighbors letting us know that Sandy was lying in her yard, not moving, and that she didn't look good.

We rushed her to the vet, but after several x-rays it was determined that her internal injuries were just to extensive for her to be saved.

After a lot of heartache, I had to make the difficult decision to euthanize my beloved pet. I petted her, looking into her eyes and telling her how much I loved her and how grateful I was that she was willing to give her life to protect mine and my home as she silently slipped away..."

Sometimes saving a life means giving a life. The wonderful thing justdawn is Sandy was willing to do that for you. Not many people you meet in your lifetime would give their life for you, but Sandy did. So thank you again for reminding me that sometimes your pet will pay the ultimate price for you and rather than ignore that, lets celebrate it.

And secondly I would like to ask that our readers sponsor justdawn’s blogathon charity the National MS Society. She’s a mere $10 away from her goal of $100.

If 10 of you give $1 she’ll be able to make that difference for her charity and bring away a sense of purpose and accomplishment no one will take from her.

Remember you can sponsor anyone at the blogathon up to 6AM Tuesday Aug. 1st 2006.

Thanks again justdawn! Good luck!

For the 5 AM post, the home stretch, I am going to give some credit where credit is past due.

Today I witnessed many many people pulling for the pets at Glendale Humane. Volunteers who don't just put in one day a year, but who show up every day to help care for animals, and who prepare them for their second chance.

They don't do it for money, or recognition. They certainly don't do it for the hygiene!

They do it because they believe helping a fellow living being is more important than sleeping in, or sitting comfortably on their couch watching daytime drama.

every day they are saving animals, the same animals who will go on to save someone else one day, in one way or another. This is how people save us every day as well.

To the staff and volunteers of Glendale Humane Society, what you do does not go unnoticed, but I take the most comfort in knowing you would continue to do the wonderful work you do even if it did...

Game 19

Will I do this again next year?

I can safely say that this has been one of the best days of my life.

I woke up at 12 am yesterday in a panic attack, only 6 hours to the blogathon. I wasn't sure what to expect, would it be hard, tedious, will I fail? Will my touch of social phobia keep me from being able to interact with the staff of GHS, or even function at all? Will any of the people I had asked to help out by sharing a story or promoting the blogathon come thru?

By mid day I realized this wasn't only going to work, but it was going to be wonderful, and something I will take with me in a memory close to my heart.

Next year, count on it. This time more publicity, more celebrity endorsements, more sponsors, more planning, more interactivity!

Next year even more of a reason to believe in the good of man to give selflessly.

The Tsunami and the Yellow Dog

Ok, another story of a heroic dog saving his lived ones! Blogathon is winding down with only an hour and a half left!

On with our story.

When you have to make a hard choice you're always left feeling a bit down, but when that choice is which of your children you will save it feels like theres no hope at all. That’s what happened for Sangeeta when a Tsunami hit her house on the shore. With only 2 arms and 3 children she took the youngest and called to her 7 year old son Dinakaran. Dinakaran however, did not follow his mother and instead ran into his home for safety from the giant wave. His mother escaped up a hill with the waves lashing her heels and watched her son disappear into the water.

But Dinakaran wasn’t the only member of the family to stay behind, Selvakumar the family dog barely made it into their home behind the boy. His persistant tugging and nipping directed the boy out and to safety with his mother and siblings.

No one had any idea this yellow pooch would save their family, but across the globe dogs put their own lives aside to help rescue their loved ones.

You can read the story here for all the nitty grittys.

Been over an hour since BE radio gave up on us thoners!

So let me take a moment to tell you another sad story with a guarenteed happy ending in the works.

Meet Zeba, the Pekingese with an underbite!

Zeba was another of the office dwellers, but sitting opposite a fence so we never got to hang out like paris and I did. She'd sass me whenever I'd walk up to her and I'd always reply back, because something about that silly mug she makes cracks you up!

Zeba is a wonderful dog, with a sad story. She came to GHS in the most aweful of condition, her previous owners were neglectful and Zeba was one sick pup. But the miracle workers Glendale Humane staffers are, they patched her right up and soon she was able to make a full recovery and won the heart of a dear woman.

Yes Zeba was adopted into a forever home, only Zeba found out tragiclly, sometimes forever can be only 2 months. After having a lovely time in her new home, everything seemed to be wonderful, then Zeba's new adopted mother died suddenly leaving Zeba minus one family and back in GHS.

Zeba is cute, small (great for smaller homes), and has anough personality to fill a stadium. If you're interested in Zeba you can see her full profile here.

Meet Tiki,

Tiki, aka Mr. Rabbit, aka Perfect, aka Beau, aka Mookie, aka Booty is a German Spitz (think of him as forefather of the Pomeranian) and the sunshine in every day I live since he came into my life.

I'm going to assume that you're thinking, "what does your dog have to do with animal rescue?"

Tiki, although the kindest, smartest, most well behaved dog in the world... un-contested... was not the ball of fluff, love, and sunshine when he first walked into my living room and began rubbing on my couch.

Almost instantly Tiki's antics caught the breath from everyone's chest and we would watch him play for hours before he'd finally crash with a snort and slunk off to sleep.

It didn't take long to decide that Tiki was a permanent member of the family. But Tiki was hiding a dark secret. He was a biter.

One hell of a biter as I would soon find out.

Tiki was found wandering the streets of Santa Monica by PETA, and was placed in 2 or 3 homes prior to landing in my life. Reason he kept getting rehomed? You guessed it, he bit the bejeezus out of everyone who adopted him.

It didn't take long to find out what was his trigger either. Touch him on his rump and you'd have shredded meat for an arm. Just the slightest touch would send him into pac man mode and the jaws went everywhere. I was the first to discover this when Kat asked me to move him out from under the desk, and showing NO signs of aggression before I thought "no problem" but when my arm bumped his rump I found myself in sudden, serious need for a first aid kit.

And believe me I was mad. Nothing like ruining my nice white shirt with blood stains, oh yes and the WRETCHED PAIN to set someone into a rotten mood.

But he was out buddy, we weren’t about to send him back to get the needle when PETA gives up on him. So we kept working with him, trying to scold, squirt, and paper swat him when he lunged for a limb (always mine because I'm the guinea pig!) And just when my gaping wounds would start to heal he'd get me again.

After about the 4th time, I was just about at the end of my rope. How do you avoid touching a dogs rump? There was nothing wrong with his hips and joints, he wasn't in pain, he was just.... a bit off.

Then one day during our usual run and chase game involving brooms, sticks, faxed work papers, bats and anything else you can wave like a wild 'nanimal while being chased around in circles by your favourite playtime pal (and rabid biter) he'd chase me for a while then I'd swat the floor in front of me signaling it was my turn to chase him and accidentally hit a metal food bowl.

TING!!!

Loud and annoying, Kat, her friend Shannon and myself clutched our ears in shock and turned to look at Tiki, only to find a poof of dust and a tiki sized hole in the hall door.

Ting, the magic anti Tiki!

So the basic behaviour mod rules apply, every time he does something heinous like go to shred my extremities, we'd TING! a little metal bowl we kept near by. Ears back, paws in a rush and one freaked out Tiki, within a week, no more biting. A week after that, no more under the bed aggression. Within a month the perfect dog.

Now you see why he's often called "Perfect".

Now over a year later, Tiki is the MOST social dog I have ever met. Great with all people, other dogs, cats, rodents! And soon to enter training to be a service dog for the elderly (already getting warmed up on weekly visits to some seniors to brighten their day).

Sometimes what seems like an unfixable dog ends up being your reason to get up every morning. This is a lesson Glendale Humane stresses. Just because a dog appears flawed at first does NOT mean it's not the perfect dog for the perfect person.

Tiki every day is a lesson to me, that a tiger can change it's stripes and everyone gets second chances.

Tiki this post is for you! Love you buddy

3 AM is here, and I'm wondering how many people are still kicking around for this blogathon. Entering hour 26 now for myself and, and I think our dear champion Kat has joined the land of the dreamers at hour 29, but I am afraid to check because I have no desire of waking her if she managed to finally get sleep. She worked so hard today, raising funds, promoting the blog, and helping gather celebrities to show their support of GHS and the Blogathon.

I wanted everyone to know this whole time, while I was prancing with the dogs and cats of Glendale Humane Society like a kid in a candy shoppe, she was home, typing away, spreading the word, sharing the love, sponsoring other blogs, making phone calls, etc, so don't be fooled by the number of posts in my name, none of this would happen if it was not for her.

And I just wanted to take time out for the 3AM post to dedicate to her.

Kat this one is for you, thanks, from me, the sponsors, and all your good friends on 2, 3, and 4 legs :)

Game 17

What do I like most about my life?

It may be no suprise, if anyone has read this blog, but I'd say it's those smiling faces I see every day when I first open my eyes...

Yes these smiling faces.

Tiki

Little Bit

Standing on my chest, wagging their tails with that "I really wanna poop" look in their eyes.

And when my morning starts out that way, no matter what happens, my life seems a lot more tolerable.

Put your paw in my hand

Atticus is another shining example of how Glendale Humane waves their magic wand and transforms dogs who are on death row to dogs that catch your eye and theive yout heart.

Earilier today Kat posted the story of Atticus, and when I was at GHS she made sure while talking to me on the phone, that I'd spend some time with him.

Of course, he's the first dog to catch your eye when you walk into the GHS kennel area because he looks like a giant ball of sunshine, big smiles, playful bouncing, he grabs your attention rather you like it or not.

Now we all know how Atticus went from

Mange

to

Magnificent!

What I didn't realize is what a charmer he would turn out to be.

Sure we talked for a while, he sniffed my hand and I scruffed his brow, I was looking forward to some off leash time with him, but unfortunately didn't get the chance. However he absolutely melted my heart when as I was leaning close to him, kennel door between us, he took a lick in my direction and got a tongue full of fence. Most dogs would give up there, thinking "it aint happening, bub" but not Atticus, he just leaned near me, and slipped his big fuzzy paws under the gate and onto my hands.

I just smiled at the charm and perciverance of Atticus and pet his paws for a while. I can tell you, when Atticus finds his home, someone will become a very lucky parent.

Atticus is currently available for adoption at Glendale Humane Society. You can view his profile here.

Game 16

Something that scares me personally, the thought of Rush Limbaugh in woman's lingerie shaking a bottle of viagra.

And even revealing that I've had that mental image to be terrified of not only proves I've been up WAY too long, but that Glendale Humane will need that $5 to help cover therapy costs after they read this post :P

And that's my answer to Game 16

Emmett, the underdog

This afternoon I had the joy of spending half an hour with Emmett, a guilty pleasure I admit, taking my whole 30 minutes with just one dog, but let me tell you, Emmett is no ordinary dog.

First off let me tell you, Emmett is a black retreiver, and he immediately went to work retreiving my heart. When I asked what dogs should I feature, Emmett was a shoo in, and feature him is what I will do.

Emmett, as you will hear in the video is a senior resident at GHS, putting in more than his fair stint at the shelter, but he's warmed hearts at every turn. This dog is the definition of love and affection and the moment I walked into the off leash park located at GHS and saw him sitting in the pool panting happily as he got hosed off and scrubbed I thought "this is a definitave "man's best friend".

At first he was reluctant to give up his ball. It was "be the ball" time for Emmett.

So it was back to bathtime, and he forgot his ball for a bit. Suddenly he notices a bouncing tennis ball and with the look of excitement and anticipation to please his audience with his daily constitutional of pool fetch he was off like a lightning bolt!

And I heard the story of Emmett, and his unwilling owners, and so Emmett sits awaiting his next family, one who will understand he's a little shy with company, but I can't help but wonder as I play with Emmett, who would ever return such a friendly dog?

Let me tell you, if I had Emmett in my family, I'd never let him go!

Emmett is available for adoption right now, and if you're looking for a companion dog who will gladly seek to please and entertain you, Emmett is your guy!

You can read more about Emmett on his profile at Glendale Humane's Website.

And thats the story of Emmett, that I had long promised, and finally was able to deliver! I'm sure you'll agree a special dog like that is well worth the wait!

But I will be staying by here with more GHS stories, people's personal experiences with pets and pet rescue, more amazing tales of heroic animals.

And just reminding everyone to turn your browsers to BE Radio for full blogathon coverage.

We Are Family

A bizarre story from Kenya caught my attention when a infant girl, abandoned by her mother, is rescued by an unlikely mom.

After being left for 2 days in the wilderness, a baby girl was picked up by a stray dog and brought to her litter. The mother dog found the baby wrapped in a plastic bag and without notice of their differences, freed her of the bag and carried her home to her litter.

She was found among the pups and taken to a local hospital. Thanks to her amazing rescue by an amazing dog, the public began donating clothing and supplies to the baby. Her mother may have been an awful person to abandon her that way, but her new mom is without a doubt man’s best friend.

You can get the whole story here.

Happy July 30th, the second day of the 2006 blogathon!

Dinner bells a ringin'

well it's luchtime for your dynamic duo, and so Piza hut Delivers! Ironically that was also breakfast for me at GHS!

But this is a pet related blog right? So how about this for pet related.

My dog burst thru the door when the Pizza man came.

Not to attack the "intruder"

Not to make a mad dash down the road to a new life as a hitch hiking dog (hard to do with no thumbs anyway)

But to beg the Pizza man for some Pizza.

The lesson, your dog might not always protect the house, but you can be sure they'll protect their dinner!

So till the next post, the first post of July 30th!

Fresh as a Daisy

A touching story of a rescue named Daisy who spent over 2 years at GHS before finding her forever home. This was recorded earilier today but I hadn't had the chance to share it. But it's just another example of how GHS never gives up, and how every pet, even shelter ones have an owner, they just don't know it yet :)

Kids & Pet's

Most all problems and bites between kids and the household pet are entirely preventable. Parents must closely supervise their kids and animals when together, NEVER leave young child unattended with a pet. The age at which they can spend any time without supervision depends on the maturity of the child and the temperament of the pet. It only takes a split second for a bad move from a child to turn into a bad move from the pet, and injury occurs. Dogs sometimes see children as subordinate members of the pack who need to be put in their place, and a trainer or behaviorist might be able to help you immensely. But, if your pet is showing signs of aggression, and you truly believe your children are in any danger, it would probably be best to find a home with a person prepared to deal with this problem. Children also need to be taught to respect their pet's needs and feelings, empathy for others is a very important lesson.

This is quoted from a website filled with resources, and facts for People with Children that may have some worries about how their pets may mix with their kids.

Update on Paris

Remember Paris the dog? My little office buddy for the day at GHS? I have some more back story to share with you all.

Paris found herself at GHS when she was written off by a another shelter, and surely would have seen her end. But GHS, seeing how sweet and remarkable she was took her in and soon bad news struck when they found out she had cancer. Tumors were removed once only to have more soon take their place. She survived another bout of cancer and became a true miracle dog, given a second chance by a true miracle organiation, glendale Humane Society.

For all of you who didn't hear, Marsha, ruler of the dogs here at Glendale Humane, did an interview for BE Radio, and again thanks to both Marsha and BE Radio for taking the time.

So things are really winding down here at Glendale Humane, as they closed the doors to the public. I'm going to be sticking around for a while longer to get some more information about the "going ons" of GHS after the doors close.

But again it's been a wonderful day here at Glendale Humane, and I'm greatful to be a part of it.

More to come, stay tuned!

Here is an adoreable pair named Polkadot and Jigaloo, they are both available for adoption.

I just spent half an hour with a wonderful dog named Emmett, and will be posting videos and pictures of him within the hour.

It's been such an enjoyable day, among all the dogs and cats, on a beautiful overcast Los Angeles day, makes me with blogathons happened more often.

So until 5:00, take care and hug your pet!

The Tale of Starcrossed Lovers

And a featurette on their unadopted daughter Astrid to come....

Stay tuned, and stay awake! More live blogging from GHS to come!

Snarkypants thank you so much for the $10 Sponsorship!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Is there anything I can do for you special?

Tatum, the true story

I'd like to introduce you to Tatum, the first dog I posted from Glendale Humane. Tatum has been here a while, because her excited barking sometimes wards off perspective adopters. But don't be fooled, she's a real sweetie as you will see in the following video.

See you in Paris

Meet Paris, asside from the two kittens whom I have lovingly dubbed tweedle-dee and tweedle-dum is my other "office assistant" of the day. An adorable and adoptable female terrier mix, Paris didn't take long to win me over, she's so sweet and affectionate, and has eyes that scream "give me love.... or treats!". Just look at her sad eyes as she rests her head on my lap.

You can find out more about Paris here.

I think Pico the Monitor abandoned...

Here is a video introducing Sabrina, the Austrailian Cattle Dog mix, she is available here at glendale humane for adoption.

Total pledges: 260.00

We're doing so great for first timers this year!!! Thank you all!!! I hope you continue enjoying this blog!

My Little Friends

So here I am posting from the Glendale Humane office, and I'd like to introduce you to the lovely couple on my left.

These sweet little guys are no bigger than my hand, and were left here at Glendale Humane, but really, who can resist a pair of barely got their eyes open kittens!!!

Oh the many perks of blogging from an animal rescue shelter. So every time I come back to update the blog, I get to look forward to the zany antics of these little guys!

Well upward and onward, my next post will definately be about dogs, or you will all start thinking I'm a cat guy!

Enter the kitten room!

Behind this door lies the golden land for all cat and kitten lovers, the Glendale Humane Kitten Room!

but I warn you what you're about to see may just melt your heart!

The most beautiful kitten play room I have seen with some of the cutest kittens in the world!

The moment I walk in they run up to me, rubbing against my leg, mewing at me with little pink mouths, sniffing my cats on my pantleg.

Yes I realize I'm in trouble and start to think of the 30 minute deadline because, folks, I could be in this room forever.

I play with the kitties, because I can't possible resist and I thank my lucky start Kat isn't here, I'd have to drag her away kicking and screaming!

But they soon tire out.

this one lays down to take a nap on their kitten size bed.

This one is asleep at his post... Ok no more puns I swear.

but this guy... I think he's giving me the bird!

all in all I say beware blog viewers, because once you enter the kitten room, you'll be hard pressed to leave.

I am sure many of you animal lovers are aware of the War On Pitbulls going on in the states. Stereotypes are not tolerated when it comes to people regardless of "statistical evidence" or not, so why should we tolerate it within our pets??

This Pitbull saves a kid from an alleged kidnapping. Mind you he was SAVING not EATING. People get so caught up with labels, and stereotypes. They think that they are Absolute Truth. When often they are exaggerated glurge. Every breed has their dangers, and their down falls.

Btw here is the cool News Source!

There's No Place Like Home

Meet Ellie, the cutest and sweetest dog you may ever meet! When I first saw her this morning I found myself almost disappointed that she was adopted and just awaiting her new home.

10 minutes later when my tour of the kennels was complete her new family came along to pick her up, pink collar and leash entow.

Ellie is just one of many beautiful and adorable dogs that Glendale Humane has helped, and her new family is just one of many families who have found their perfect pet here at Glendale Humane.

For any of you in the Los Angeles area, please feel free to stop by, visit the animals, and say hello! You too might meet your perfect pet here at Glendale Humane.

Greetings from Glendale California, blogging live from the Glendale Humane Society.

I've been spending time getting familiar with all the beautiful dogs and cats here, hearing their stories, watching them play. It's pure heaven here for an animal lover, and as it seems the animals seem to think it's heaven too.

I've been lucky enough to witness a family adopt a dog, and spend some time speaking with a lady looking to adopt a kitty for her home. The connection was instant and the cat took to her like a fish to water.

Bisbee has found himself a wonderful home and seems excited about his new home. Congradulations Bisbee!

And this is the miracle of Glendale Humane, they seem to find the perfect match for everyone who walks thru the door, or as in Bisbee's case, he found his own perfect match!

Much much more to come, please keep checking in, and again I'd like to thank BE Radio for taking the time to speak with me about Glendale Humane, and for their donation. My hats off to you!

Let's get serious for a moment. Empathy is one of the leading things we really have to base moral choices on.

We are seperated by species, but we are all connected in spirit. The person who wrote this poem obviously knew a little bit about rescue as most people will lie to the shelters, and toss dogs & cats alike in for 'medical reasons'. Not everyone ever has the kitty sneezles.

Sure it is slightly a propogandic poem, but there is an understanding of canine in here that can only come from a true pet lover who
decided to try to walk a mile in their paws.

Here is the poem:

Do I Go Home Today?

My family brought me home, cradled in their arms,
They cuddled me and smiled at me, said I was full of charm.

They played with me and laughed with me, they showered me with toys,
I sure do love my family, especially the girls and boys.

The children loved to feed me, they gave me special treats,
They even let me sleep with them, all snuggled in their sheets.

I used to go for many walks, often several times a day,
They even fought to hold the leash, I'm very proud to say.

They used to laugh and praise me, when I played with that old shoe,
But I didn't know the difference between the old ones and the new.

The kids and I would grab a rag, and for hours we would tug,
So I thought I did the right thing when I chewed the bedroom rug.

They said I was out of control and would have to live outside,
This I did not understand, although I tried and tried.

The walks stopped, one by one; they said they hadn't time,
I wish that I could change things, I wish I knew my crime.

My life became so lonely in the backyard on a chain.
I barked and barked all day long to keep from going insane.

So they brought me to a shelter, but were embarrassed to say why,
They said I caused an allergy, and then kissed me good-bye.

If I'd only had some classes when I was just a pup,
I wouldn't have been so hard to handle, when I was all grown up.

"You only have one day left," I heard a worker say.
Does this mean a second chance? Do I go home today?

Sitting outside by the main kennel area, I'm privy to witness the secret life of Tatum and her toy fettish.

Excitedly Tatum bounces in anticipation of her toy, and I can't help but think, this dog will keep someone entertained hours on end.

Tatum is available for adoption now, you can read more about her at the GHS website.

What Cat's Do For Us
-by someone who's name got lost in a million forwards by bored people at work

Warm our laps
Give us someone to talk to
Help reduce high blood pressure
Bring the winter air inside, nestled in their coats
Create a kindred feeling with other "cat people"
Turn common household objects like bottle caps into toys
Make us more aware of birds
Donate their services as alarm clocks
Display daring acrobatic feats right in front of our eyes
Contribute to living a longer life
Make a window sill more beautiful
Keep mice on the run
Make us smile
Inspire poets and playwrights
Teach us how to land on our feet
Let us indulge our desires to really spoil someone
Make our homes warmer
Remind us that life is mysterious
Share with us the all-is-well experience of purring
Instruct us in the luxurious art of stretching
Show us how to lick our wounds and go on
Give us cool cartoon characters
Make even an old worn couch look beautiful
Open our hearts
---

I thought that was pretty cute. Especially the whole winter nestled in their coats thing. That really made my heart all gooey, and warm. I'm not being sarcastic either. I notice I'm in a sarcastic mood today. I don't know why.

Brant has JUST touched base. The eagle has landed. He is now currently setting up LIVE AT GLENDALE HUMANE! So this blog is about to get alot less boring! Wooot Go Blogathonzorz.

I never realized how short 1/2 really was until today. Time really is relative.

A Dog Named Blue Saves His New Owner

I know we have featured alot of heroic service dog type videos today.

Maybe what I didn't cover completely is that a service dog could come from anywhere. Dogs that have been abandoned on the streets have ended up invaluable. It goes to show you we need to try to understand our furry friends a little better as we are still discovering all the wonderful things they are all capable of.

Well, I have everything charged up, packed up and am on my way currently to Glendale Humane. See you there!

Okay sorry again for another erratic & short post, but I need to switch computers as Brant packs up the Laptop to go live to Glendale Humane.

Please forgive. Brant cannot keep an organized computer and I need this to be a lean mean blogging machine with tabs & websites open galore. Bwhahahahaha.

We won!! We won!! $30 for Glendale Humane. You blogathonners GOT to tune into Blog Explosion radio!

I saw a video today of a Bull Terrier who saved a Matador being gored by a Bull. (yes I do see the irony of a bull terrier matched up against a bull) The story struck me in so many ways.

I have decided not to post the video for 2 reasons, one I do not personally agree with bull fighting, especially if the bull is harmed in any way and also because there were scenes of the Matador being gored and the dog taking a few nasty hits that made my heart jump.

But the story was still interesting to me.

A man, in trouble while trying to match up against a bull, takes a few horns in the mid section and when this dog sees the events unfold, jumps out of the stands, and immediately runs to his aid with no thought to the danger he is up against. The man owes his life to this dog who he does not even know. The dog put its life on the line for a man he does not know. How many strangers would do that for you? This is just another example of how animals save us every day. Sometimes they’re your beloved pet, sometimes they’re a stray on the street, and sometimes it’s a tough as nails dog in the stands. I saw the dog take hit after hit by an animal ten times his size but he kept coming back and leading it away from the injured man. I can’t say I’d get in a head butting match with a pickup truck and keep coming back each time I was knocked down, but the little black and white wonder did.

In the end the best part is the dog and the bull were unharmed and I hope that man found a new respect for animals.

Kitty Jokes!! Let's lighten the mood with some silly kitty jokes... shaalll we?

A tom cat and a tabby cat were courting on a back fence at night. The tom leaned over to the tabby with pent up passion and purred... "I'll die for you!" The tabby gazed at him from under lowered eye lids and asked, "How many times?"

That was a good one. Shush you. You KNOW you laughed. At least a little.

Okay let's try Kitty Haiku's:

You never feed me.
Perhaps I'll sleep on your face.
That will sure show you.

You must scratch me there!
Yes, above my tail! Behold,
Elevator butt.

I need a new toy.
Tail of black dog keeps good time.
Pounce! good dog! good dog!

The rule for today:
Touch my tail, I shred your hand.
New rule tomorrow.

In deep sleep hear sound
Cat vomit hairball somewhere
Will find in morning

*deeply chortles and holds belly*
I have more of those I'm going to post next 1/2 hour. We got alot of time to kill so let's have a Chuckle For Charity shall we?

Soon I will be sending Brant on down to Glendalehumane.org to post LIVE with video and footage so hopefully I can keep you amused until then!

BTW we will be calling into Blog Explosion Radio later, they are covering the Blogathon live. Check it out.

Atticus looks like your average rescue dog. He is a mix, in bad shape. If you saw this dog running free down your street you may not be shocked. You may look the other way. Or maybe you would pull over and pick him up. The least you could do is bring him to an Animal Shelter so he doesn't die a long slow death on the streets you may think to yourself...

He's your average stray... and there is so many like him in the world that you might wonder if anything good in the world that can be for a dog like him.

Atticus ended up at a local Animal Shelter. The way he looked, and a few other factors didn't give him a great chance at getting adopted. His family did not come for him. He was pretty doomed if not for a miracle or canine anomaly.

Then a Miracle did happen. Glendale Humane picked him. They are going to fix him up, work with him, fill him with love, and find his forever home.

Some people, shelters, and rescues may have dubbed this animal as unadoptable. Glendale say the Miracle within Atticus and took him under their wing. When you Sponsor Me today you will be sponsoring Happy Endings such as these.

Look at him after Glendale had some time with him:

Atticus has not found his Forever Home yet, but we're positive he will with the aid of this wonderful charity.

Border Collie saves a dying vagabond.
News Source

Often we see animals as the small and voiceless ones.

As I get ready to drive down to Glendale and set up for the live blogging I came across this interesting story from July of 2003 that offers a seat on the other end of that teeter-totter. In Scotland, a man who lives off the land fell ill and his dying pleas of help were only heard by one Border Collie named Ben who quickly delivered his message.

His life hanging in the balance and having no idea his guardian angel was a farm dog down the road, things seemed dismal for Robert Sinclair, age 55. He had spent days without food or water before wrote a plea for help and put it in a bottle.

Ben found this message in a bottle and brought it to his owner Brian Besler. Mr. Besler then took it to the police. Luckily for Robert Sinclair he was taken to a hospital and made a full recovery.

The beauty of it all is Ben the Border Collie acted without prejudice to the man in need, who most disregard as a quirky hobo. He started out a four legged farmhand, and finished a hero.

You can read the full story here.

I also want to take a moment to personally thank everyone who has participated in this event, not limited to the sponsors, Glendale Humane, our Monitor Pico, the kind people who have contributed their own stories, and who have commented on others, and most of all the beloved pets who have inspired so many.
